3667c02ec3cd315c50725c101680a9ba-163x265Bookswarm recently launched a website for debut YA novelist Virginia Bergin, whose book The Rain tells the story of one girl’s desperate fight for survival in the face of global environmental catastrophe (with added snogging).

One minute sixteen-year-old Ruby Morris is having her first proper snog with Caspar McCloud in a hot tub, and the next she’s being bundled inside the house, dripping wet, cold and in her underwear. Not cool.

As she and Caspar shiver in the kitchen, it starts to rain. They turn on the radio to hear panicked voices – ‘It’s in the rain . . . it’s in the rain . . .’

That was two weeks ago, and now Ruby is totally alone. People weren’t prepared for the rain, got caught out in it, didn’t realize that you couldn’t drink water from the taps either. Even a drip of rain would infect your blood, and eat you from the inside out. Ruby knows she has to get to London to find her dad, but she just doesn’t know where to start . . .

After rescuing all the neighbourhood dogs, Ruby sets off on a journey that will take her the length of the country – surviving in the only way she knows how.

Because the book has a different title and cover in the USA, we have set up IP address detection to show the right version of the book to the right audience, as well as designing a site with a flexible selection of background images that reinforce the weather theme.

I’m a stubborn old mule. I’d designed and built a website before, so why would I want someone else to do it for me?

WHY?! Because there is no way I could have done what Simon and the amazing Bookswarm team can do. I am willing to admit that they knew better than me what I needed, and how an author’s site needs to work. They know about books. They know about design. They know about websites. (And a whole load of other stuff: I got serious Gmail help, Facebook help and a business card!). They did everything for me (and at a fantastic price; brilliant value for money!).

I now have a terrific website – that’s capable of expansion and tailored to handle visitors from the US as well as the UK – and, thanks to Simon’s training session, I know how to use it.
